I’ve always enjoyed working with people. After studying psychology and Spanish at Creighton University, I landed a job as a family support worker with the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services. My role involved helping clients address their financial situation from an emotional standpoint, but I wanted to work more with people on the financial side.

Then one day I read about the financial representative training program at Mutual of Omaha. The program offered the career opportunities I was looking for, but I didn’t have a strong financial background, so I wasn’t sure I’d qualify.

However, I decided to put my doubts aside and meet with a Mutual of Omaha recruiter — and I’m really glad I did. As it turned out, I didn’t need extensive experience in finance. Plus, as a family support worker, I developed skills I could use as a financial representative.

These skills included a deep understanding of people, a keen sense of building relationships and a desire to make a difference in the lives of my clients.

While I still need to build my financial skill set, I know my mentor, supervisors and co-workers are there to support me. I feel like the opportunities are endless now. Watch the video to learn more about my story.

I was a family support worker before I started working with Mutual of Omaha. I was helping out families who were working with CPS, helping them figure out their financial stability just so they could get their kiddos back. I did do a lot of budgeting with them, but I felt like that wasn't enough. I wanted to do something where I felt like I was making a bigger impact, even though I loved doing that job before.

But I really wanted to find something where I felt like I was helping them out in a more financial way, rather than in the emotional way. I did find Mutual of Omaha through LinkedIn, and the job description sounded like the opportunities that I wanted to take for myself, and they checked a lot of the boxes that I was looking for.

And that's why I decided to apply with Mutual of Omaha. Once I went into the interview process, it felt like I was qualified for this. And a big part of this job is helping out people. And I felt like I already had experience doing that, and it was something that I loved, and I wanted to continue doing that with Mutual of Omaha.

The moment that really solidified that I should be in for T with Mutual of Omaha is that I was helping out the Hispanic community here in Omaha, even though I didn't have a financial background. I felt like the skills that I developed in my past position, where something that really helped me out with this job, I built client relationships, I built people skills, and I felt like that was something that is really needed in this position.

But I didn't have a lot of finance background and the support that I've gotten through, my supervisors, my coworkers, they've really helped me out in figuring out the financial part while also building client relationships. I feel like the opportunities are endless now. I in my past job, I felt like I had a limited amount of knowledge of the financial side of helping out people.

But now that I'm with Mutual of Omaha, I feel like the opportunities have grown so much. You should definitely apply. I felt like with my background, I didn't have the chance to start with Mutual of Omaha, but I applied. I took a chance on myself and I definitely love being here with Mutual of Omaha.
